FAO launched its first ever report on "The State of Knowledge of Soil Biodiversity". The report, with the participation of Pilar Andrés as an expert, examines the potential of soil organisms in ensuring sustainable agri-food systems and mitigating climate change.
We have published the first international CREAF's newsletter with the purpose of improving our visibility, reputation and recruitment of talent. Its common thread is ecology as a solution and it includes current events as diverse as 'la Caixa' postdoctoral scholarships with the experience of Oriol Lapiedra and the opinion of Marc Palahí, director of the European Forest Institute, about his previous work with us.
The report has been prepared by an EKLIPSE expert working group, including researcher Pilar Andrés, and presentates a serie of key points at the scientific, political and social levels to improve the restoration of ecosystems. These results were included in the 2019 IPBES soil degradation conference.
Since mid-2020 CREAF has been a member of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), a global association of research, professionals and community leaders from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and North and South America, which is actively involved in the ecological recovery of degraded ecosystems, using a wide range of experience and knowledge.
Today, May 25, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) publishes the Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas, first-ever of this topic. It’s a European Comission iniciative, available and free for everyone who is interested in. This atlas maps the soil biodiversity of the entire planet by providing an exhaustive analysis of soil organisms and the threats it has to face. Soil management could help the mitigation of the effects of climate change.
The researcher Pilar Andrés will depart for two years to the USA, to Colorado to study the soil ecology of the Great Plains. Specifically, the project that she presented aims to improve the models that explain the decomposition of organic matter in the soil and contribute to the improvement of models of the carbon and nitrogen cycles.
